Or rather the appropriate question would be: Why do I want to study Psychology? And then the world, quite convulsed and sometimes contradictory, of our motivations unfolds before us.
First of all, no one can decide for us if this or that career is the right one for each one, it is a personal decision for which we must not only be well informed but properly motivated.
In this space I limit myself to showing some ideas on which every young person who seriously considers opting for this career or for one of the specialties of Psychology should reflect.
Psychology is a beautiful career, which allows us to improve our relationships with the environment and ourselves. Without a doubt, once we start it, our world will not be the same. But some details need to be known in advance:
– The Psychology degree does not act as a Psychotherapy session, if you want to study it to eliminate your own problems it is better to forget it. The psychologist, whether a specialist in marketing or psychopedagogy, will always meet people with difficulties and very serious problems, which cause immense wear and tear if we do not have the necessary psychological balance to face and manage them.
– If you want to earn money immediately or make huge profits from this job, it is not the case, unless we have the rare opportunity of obtaining a secure and well-paid position as soon as we leave the University. Normally the best option is private work, but also in this sector there is enough competition, so in many cases the psychologist must be creative enough to invent his/her own work and space. Although, of course, once you are established and as long as you love the profession, the job is very rewarding and decent.
– If you want to study Psychology because it is an easy specialty, to achive without studying too much, forget it, because you are wrong! Psychology, as a young science and in full development, demands a fairly high power of integration and creativity. Approaching the profession studying little, perhaps it is possible; Be a good professional following this perspective: impossible!
– On the other hand, today a great number of psychologists study postgraduate courses, which means that to be in the market, with the 5 years of specialty you have only started the profession and you must invest more time, money and effort in a Master training.
Like any specialty, Psychology has also its pros and cons. But I consider that there is nothing more beautiful than having the possibility of helping people and seeing on their faces the recognition of your work and their appreciation. So…
To those who decide: Have a good trip through the world of the Psyche!
