Wayne W. Dyer was a psychologist and author of highly popular self-help books. In fact, he is known as “the father of motivation.” His book “Your Erroneous Zones,” which has sold 35 million copies worldwide, brought him fame and allowed him to travel from country to country, giving talks to help people who wanted to change their lives. After this work, he wrote 25 more books, five of which were dedicated to children.
Thanks to his work, many people have realized their true potential and have been able to implement positive transformations in their lives. However, what few know is that this successful psychologist was an orphan who grew up in a poor neighborhood in Ohio. He attempted a military career but realized that psychology was his calling. He didn’t achieve success overnight; he had to struggle a lot. But in the end, his tenacity and passion were rewarded.
His writing style launched him to worldwide fame, although his free spirit led him far from the hustle and bustle of urban chaos as he increasingly drew closer to Taoism. For this reason, his final resting place was on the island of Maui. One of his most valuable teachings is that he reminds us that we are not our country, race, religion, or profession; we are much more than that. When we stop labeling ourselves, we can discover who we truly are, unleash our potential, and change the world—at least the one around us.
Life lessons summarized in phrases that we should always keep in mind
1. “You can’t fail by being yourself.”
Wayne Dyer, as an exponent of Transpersonal Psychology, was convinced that self-love is essential to achieving our best. And to develop it, we must overcome our fear of failure. After all, there is no template or manual that teaches us how to be ourselves. In fact, even if you fail, you will have won because you have learned a lesson. Never identify your worth with what you do or achieve in life, because in reality, you are much more than that.
2. “What others think about you is not your problem.”
We care so much about the opinions of others that we make many decisions, some even important, to seek social acceptance or at least avoid rejection. However, true freedom is found when the opinions of others don’t influence your decisions, when you choose what truly satisfies you and makes you happy.
3. “Happiness isn’t something life gives you. Happiness is something you bring into your life.”
Your happiness depends on you, on no one else. When your basic needs are met, happiness is an inner state, a personal choice you must make every day, despite disappointments and conflicts. Happiness isn’t a gift bestowed upon a fortunate few; it’s something you strive for.
4. “Find the light in others, and treat them as if that were all you saw in them.”
This is one of my favorite quotes, but also one of the hardest to apply, as we often go through the world simply reacting to the way people treat us. However, we all have dark and bright sides. If we learn to focus on the positive, it will make our interpersonal relationships much smoother, prevent conflict, and help us maintain our inner peace. If you have to choose between being kind and being right, always choose to be kind.
5. “Doing what you love is the prelude to success in life.”
If there’s one secret ingredient to success in life, it’s passion. When you immerse yourself in something you truly love, sooner or later your efforts will be rewarded. In fact, when you embrace a dream, even if there are moments when you falter, you’ll find the strength within to keep going. So, don’t copy anyone; just follow your instinct and do what you’re passionate about.
6. “The state of your life is nothing more than a reflection of the state of your mind.”
Wayne Dyer didn’t believe in the power of circumstances. For him, there were no excuses; it’s us, through our decisions, who forge the path of our lives. Therefore, it makes no sense to look back and look for blame outside of ourselves. The best thing is to be aware that we have the power to change what we don’t like. We may not achieve this overnight, but little by little, we can get out of that situation that displeases us or we can abandon that harmful habit. Remember that you create your thoughts, your thoughts create your intentions, and your intentions shape your reality.
7. “When you change the way you see things, the things you see change.”
We see the world as we are; it’s very difficult for us to abstract ourselves from our history, beliefs, stereotypes, and value system. However, sometimes a shift in perspective is enough to change everything, even if nothing has changed. When you’re stuck in a conflict, try changing the way you see things; perhaps the solution lies where you least expect it. In any case, remember that there are situations or people that cannot be changed, so all we have to do is change the way we face them.
8. “You don’t have to know where you’re going, the important thing is to be on the path.”
In recent years, thanks to productivity and personal growth gurus and coaches, goals have become all the rage. And the truth is, there’s nothing wrong with them, except that they can sometimes add unnecessary pressure. Sometimes, as Wayne Dyer said, it’s not the goal that’s important, but the journey; what’s essential isn’t what you’ve achieved, but the person you’ve become while walking that path.
9. “Anything can be an opportunity for growth or an obstacle that holds you back. It’s your choice.”
Life isn’t always a bed of roses. Sometimes we face misfortunes, conflicts, setbacks, and losses that cause us suffering. However, we can choose to emerge stronger from these situations or let them defeat us. In fact, people who have faced many obstacles in their lives are more resilient because they know that, no matter what happens, everything passes. Problems have made them mature and grow, developing more effective strategies for dealing with adversity. One way or another, the decision is always yours.
10. “Stop acting like life is a rehearsal. Live each day as if it were your last. The past no longer exists, and the future is not guaranteed.”
Appreciate each day in its immensity. Every day is an immense gift; don’t waste it lamenting what has happened or yearning for a golden future that you don’t know will ever come. Try to be happy here and now, with what you have. Because every day you waste being happy, smiling, helping, or feeling grateful is a wasted opportunity you’ll never get again.
