painful goodbyes

There are few videos that have managed to capture with such extraordinary fidelity the emotional storm that occurs within us when we are forced to leave some things behind. It may be the home where we lived good times, the city in which we grew up, a person we loved deeply but no longer with us, an exciting project that has failed…

We all have to go through phases in which we have to say goodbye, to move forward and not remain tied to a past that only exists in our memories. Sometimes those farewells can be very painful.

Painful resignations, their emotional phases

This video, created by Hani Dombe and Tom Kouris, manages to transmit us that sea of โ€‹โ€‹sensations, from the incredible and often paralyzing nostalgia for what is no longer with us, to the determined desire to cling to a past in which we feel at ease, including that painful moment in which we made the decision to move forward.

Lili, which is how this short video is titled, reveals the phases we go through when we need to leave behind a wonderful stage that no longer exists and cannot bring us anything new.

We can notice the tranquility that the stuffed animal brings to the girl, which would be the representation of all those things known from the past that make us feel safe. In the act of placing the adhesive tape to secure all her toys, we detect our tendency to cling to the past, our resistance to change.

Later, we will see that her decision to fight against the wind, although courageous and not exempt from some tenderness, does not make any sense because life continues its course, whether we want it or not. Then we witness a stage of profound denial of reality for which we have all passed, that stage in which reality hits us with all its force.

When we realize that we cannot continue fighting against reality, something inside us breaks and the first impulse is to cling even more to the past, even though it no longer exists, simply because the future causes us panic. Then we find shelter in happy moments. In fact, it is not by chance that in that part of the video, the plush toy is bigger than the girl, which reveals to us that it is her source of security.

Then we can almost touch the fear of letting go, the resistance to leave the comfort zone in which we have lived, that mixture of nostalgia, guilt and sadness when we have to face a painful but necessary farewell.

Until in the end we take the step and we manage to make peace with our past. That past will not disappear, we will always carry it with us, but it will no longer be a weight but a sweet memory that encourages us to keep going and reminds us how strong we are.
