Virginia Woolf quotes

Considered one of the most powerful women of the 20th century, according to Time magazine, British writer Virginia Woolf is also one of the most prominent figures of literary modernism.

The daughter of an academic and a model, Virginia Woolf was born in 1882 in a London where social conventions reigned and women’s voices were silenced. Her childhood, adolescence, and youth were anything but a bed of roses. She had to endure an extremely repressive family, the death of her parents, and even sexual abuse from two of her half-brothers. As a result, it’s no surprise that the writer later suffered from emotional problems, likely bipolar disorder, which ultimately led to her suicide at the age of 59.

In her first novel, “Voyage’s End,” from 1915, she already dared to harshly criticize the notions of the time, addressing issues such as sexual ignorance, the difficulties in relationships between men and women, and their place in society. Later, in 1929, she published “A Room of One’s Own,” the essay that would fuel the feminist movement of the 1970s.

In that work, Woolf exposed the difficulties a woman had to face writing in a male-dominated world. Another seminal work for feminism that also referenced the terrible psychological effects of war was Mrs. Dalloway, which became a portrait of prevailing social inequality.

The best quotes from Virginia Woolf

  1. There’s no need to rush. There’s no need to shine. There’s no need to be anyone but yourself.

Virginia Woolf warned us of the danger of wanting to impress others and striving to conform to other people’s standards. She warned us of the risk of falling prey to the expectations others have woven for our lives. Above all of this, she puts authenticity, the search for who we are, first.

  1. The eyes of others are our prisons, their thoughts our cages.

With this phrase, the writer refers to the enormous influence that society exerts on each of its individuals, to the point that social norms and expectations can become prisons for those who do not follow its canons.

  1. A self that keeps changing is a self that keeps living.

Experiences transform us; they not only change our perspectives but also our personalities. A self that remains tied to its prejudices, stereotypes, and beliefs is a self that doesn’t live, one that is stuck in the past without progressing.

  1. To enjoy freedom, we have to control ourselves.

This quote by Virginia Woolf takes us directly back to the idea that our freedom ends where the freedom of others begins. Therefore, if we want to be free, we must begin by respecting the freedom of others and being able to control ourselves.

  1. Be honest, and the result is sure to be incredibly interesting.

The society in which Virginia Woolf lived was incredibly hypocritical, so it’s no wonder the writer was obsessed with the need to be honest.

  1. Beyond the difficulty of expressing oneself, there is the supreme difficulty of being oneself.

Virginia Woolf referred to the fact that many people don’t know themselves well enough; they have allowed society to impose too many social masks on them, behind which they have become lost.

  1. You cannot find peace by avoiding life.

Life wasn’t easy for Virginia Woolf, but if anyone knew it was necessary to make peace with the past, it was she. We can’t move forward and aspire to emotional tranquility if we haven’t healed old wounds and aren’t willing to re-injure ourselves while savoring life.

  1. Let’s not stop thinking: What is this “civilization” we find ourselves in? What are these ceremonies, and why should we participate in them? What are these professions, and why should we make money from them?

With this phrase, the author encourages us to continue searching and questioning things, even those things that have always been done this way, the most deeply rooted traditions, and the most ancient beliefs. We must not forget that sometimes we become prisoners of traditions that have lost their purpose.

  1. There is no barrier, lock, or bolt that you can impose on the freedom of my mind.

This quote by Virginia Woolf reminds us of the iron will that Viktor Frankl also showed when he was imprisoned in the concentration camps and later reminded us that the only freedom that cannot be taken away from us is the freedom to choose the attitude with which we face circumstances.

  1. Everything is ephemeral, like a rainbow.

The feeling of security and that everything is permanent is merely an illusion. Realizing this initially causes uncertainty and even fear, but it later encourages us to embrace the present, which is the only certainty we have. Remembering that the things and people we love will one day be gone allows us to be more aware of the enormous gift their presence represents.
