How many times have you swallowed in front of a group of friends to hide the tears that were about to come? On how many occasions have you felt like crying but you haven’t because you were in front of people? It is a situation that has happened to all of us, for one reason or another, we are overcome with emotion but we have to hide it because we do not want to cry in public.
However, do you think it’s really worth hiding our emotions? Who said you can’t cry when other people are present? In reality, this behavior comes from the belief that crying is synonymous with weakness and makes us appear vulnerable to others.
Obviously, it’s not about choosing crowded public places, but if you feel deeply sad or overcome with nostalgia, there is no reason for you to fight back tears.
3 reasons why we should not hold back our tears
1. Crying is an expression of our feelings. At first glance, it may seem like a platitude to you, but the truth is that crying is one of the most intense and moving expressions of our emotions. A smile can be easily faked, as can satisfaction or sadness, but crying is something very authentic so there is no reason to contain it.
2. Crying allows us to balance our emotional state. Generally, when we feel the need to cry it is because we are too tense and loaded with negative emotions, so crying acts as a floodgate that releases all those feelings. After a while, that emotional charge decreases, until we experience that state of calm and tranquility that usually follows crying.
3. Crying allows us to see the situation from a more positive perspective. When we finish crying, generally, our mind is clearer and although it is difficult to immediately think about something concrete, within a few minutes we will be able to see the situation that made us cry from a more positive perspective. This is because our emotions have been balanced and our cognition is now clear to take action.
