Brain Rot: 10 signs that infinite scrolling is affecting you more than you think

You think you’ve only spent a few minutes watching videos on your phone, but when you come to your senses, you realize almost an hour has passed. During that time, you’ve consumed dozens of videos, but you barely remember any of them.

Then you try to focus on an important task, but your mind seems to resist, as if it’s working in slow motion. As a result, you jump from one task to another, check your phone without realizing it, and by the end of the day, you feel utterly exhausted without having accomplished anything truly meaningful.

If this scene sounds familiar, you’re not alone. In recent years, a term as striking as it is unsettling has become increasingly popular: brain rot. While the name is a bit of an exaggeration, it’s a phenomenon we should pay attention to because it’s linked to cognitive fatigue, mental overload, exhaustion, and even mood disorders.

The problem isn’t screens, but how we use them

We live surrounded by stimuli. Notifications, short videos, social media, podcasts, messages, headlines, endless recommendations… Our brain receives far more information than it can properly process.

In fact, Cognitive Load Theory explains that our working memory has a limited capacity. When that capacity reaches its saturation point because it is constantly bombarded with irrelevant or fragmented information, our ability to think, learn, make decisions, or stay focused decreases.

This doesn’t mean that the internet or social media platforms are inherently harmful; the problem arises when we fall into excessive and unconscious digital consumption. Without restorative breaks, the brain barely has time to process and integrate information.

The “loss spiral”

When we consume information nonstop, our brain doesn’t rest because it’s exposed to a succession of stimuli. This causes mental fatigue. And, according to a study conducted at Karabük University, it’s the first step in a spiral that can lead to burnout and depression.

According to the Conservation of Resources Theory, we try to conserve psychological resources such as energy, attention, motivation, time, and self-control. Every time we need to adapt, control impulses, or maintain concentration, we expend some of these resources. If we fail to replenish them, we experience a kind of psychological deficit.

That’s precisely what seems to be happening with the brain damage caused by excessive screen use. Although it may not seem like it, digital consumption requires thousands of small decisions: what to look at, what to ignore, whether to reply to a message, change the video, open another app, check a notification…

Individually, they seem insignificant, but each of those decisions consumes a small amount of mental energy, so when they accumulate, they end up depleting our mental resources.

These researchers discovered that these bad browsing habits first cause psychological exhaustion. This exhaustion then increases stress and anxiety levels, and these two factors ultimately increase the risk of experiencing depressive symptoms.

Psychologists describe this process as a “spiral of loss.” When we have fewer mental resources, it becomes harder to cope with everyday problems. Feeling more tired increases stress. This stress facilitates the onset of anxiety. And when both states persist for weeks or months, the risk of developing depressive symptoms grows considerably. It’s not a sudden change, but a gradual decline.

10 signs that reveal your brain needs rest

Mental decay doesn’t appear overnight; it usually takes hold gradually through small changes that many people consider normal, and whose impact we are unaware of until it’s too late.

Some early warning signs are:

  1. You find it difficult to stay focused for even a few minutes.
  2. You constantly switch tasks because you can’t concentrate on any of them.
  3. You check your mobile phone almost without realizing it and without having anything to do.
  4. You read something or watch dozens of videos, but when you finish you discover that you remember almost nothing.
  5. You feel mentally exhausted even after resting.
  6. Everything seems to require more effort than usual.
  7. You find it difficult to enjoy activities that used to interest you.
  8. You are constantly looking for new stimuli because the previous ones stop capturing your attention very quickly.
  9. You notice a constant feeling of saturation and frustration.
  10. You end the day with the impression of having been very busy, but not very satisfied.

None of these signs alone confirms a psychological problem, but when they appear persistently, it is advisable to pay attention to them.

How to break the spiral?

The good news is that this spiral can also be reversed. Sometimes, protecting our mental health starts with a decision as simple as putting our phones aside for a while and allowing our brains to rest. It’s not about abandoning technology, but about using it more mindfully.

  1. Reclaim screen-free spaces. Activities like walking, cooking, listening to music, or having uninterrupted conversations, while being fully present, reduce the cognitive load on the brain. In these moments, the brain abandons the constant state of alertness generated by notifications and digital stimuli and begins to function in what is known as the “default mode network”, a system involved in mind-wandering, relaxation, memory consolidation, and the processing of experiences, making it essential for maintaining mental balance.
  2. Consume less content, but of higher quality. Consciously choosing what to watch is much less tiring than getting caught up in endless scrolling, and it also helps us take a more active role in the information we consume. When we deliberately decide what to pay attention to, we reduce the overload of irrelevant stimuli and avoid the feeling of saturation that comes from continuous exposure to fragmented content.
  3. Avoid digital multitasking. Every time we switch between apps, reply to a message while working, or interrupt a task to check a notification, our brain needs to readjust its focus. This switching has a cognitive cost that, repeated dozens or hundreds of times a day, ends up increasing mental fatigue and reducing performance. Concentrating for relatively long periods on a single activity not only improves productivity but also reduces the feeling of exhaustion at the end of the day.
  4. Train your sustained attention. Reading for at least 30 minutes straight or performing a single activity without interruption strengthens concentration. Attention works similarly to a muscle, so the more we exercise it, the better it resists distractions. Re-establishing the habit of dedicating time to activities that require deep concentration helps the brain escape the dynamic of immediate rewards favored by many digital platforms.
  5. Learn how to tolerate boredom. Not all empty moments need to be filled with a screen. It is precisely during these periods that the brain consolidates memories, organizes information, and fosters creativity. Although it may be uncomfortable at first, allowing ourselves to experience small periods of inactivity helps reduce our dependence on constant stimulation and improves our ability to self-regulate. Often, the best ideas or solutions appear precisely when we stop bombarding our minds with new information.

It’s important to remember that our brain isn’t designed to remain in a state of constant stimulation. It needs breaks, silence, reflection, and moments of deep focus to function healthily.

Brain rot is a sign that the brain is working beyond its capacity to recover. And when that exhaustion persists over time, it can become the first link in a chain that increases stress, anxiety, and ultimately leads to depression.
