“The River Leaves” Visualization Technique for Letting Go

Visualization Technique

Visualization is one of the most powerful psychological techniques that can be applied to deal with a variety of situations, but above all, to foster a state of inner calm and tranquility. The best part is that it’s a relatively easy technique to put into practice, so once you’ve gained enough experience, you can use it whenever you need to.

This time, I propose a very simple visualization technique that you can use when you’re feeling bad or simply when you want to experience positive emotions because you’re bored or stressed.

Steps to applying the “river leaves” visualization technique

1. Enter a state of relaxation

Before practicing the technique itself, it’s best to apply a muscle relaxation technique to help you focus on your thoughts and free yourself from your main worries. You can also use the diaphragmatic breathing technique.

2. Free yourself from negative thoughts or emotions

Close your eyes and imagine a river flowing rapidly and stretching into the distance, carrying various leaves with it. Visualize yourself beside that river or, if you prefer, submerged in it. Don’t move on to the next phase until you have clearly visualized the river and its surroundings, until you feel like you are there. You can recreate all the details you need to make the experience more real.

Now imagine that thought or emotion you want to release. For example, if you want to get rid of sadness, you can imagine it coming out of you and taking on a form. You can give it any shape and color you want. You can imagine it as a black sphere, but remember that the more details you give it, the more effective the exercise will be. Imagine its texture, size, and weight.

Now take it in your hands and place it on one of the leaves floating in the river. Leave it there and watch as the current carries it, farther and farther away from you, until you see it disappear completely. As it disappears from your sight, feel the sadness (or whatever thought or emotion you’ve chosen) leaving you.

3. Attract positive emotions or thoughts

Once you’ve freed yourself from that heavy burden, all you have to do is imagine the reverse process. That is, visualize how the leaves flowing through the river bring you happiness or tranquility. Once again, imagine what that happiness would be like; you can visualize it as a luminous white sphere. When it’s close, take it in your hands and let it enter you. Feel how its light and warmth embrace you, infusing you with a pleasant sensation.

When to use this visualization technique?

You can use this technique to eliminate all types of negative, unwanted, or harmful thoughts, but also to keep numerous negative emotions under control, such as fear, anger, anxiety, sadness, and jealousy. You can also use it to confront all types of illnesses by imagining how the river carries away the symptoms and brings you health and well-being in return.

Remember that one of the key factors for this technique to be effective is to imagine everything in as much detail as possible. The more immersed you are in the picture you’ve created, the more powerful its effect will be. It’s normal that during the first sessions you won’t be able to visualize everything very clearly. Don’t despair; with a little practice, you’ll succeed, and the images you generate will become increasingly clear.

It’s worth clarifying that when the emotions and thoughts you want to eliminate are very intense (or in the case of illnesses), you will have to repeat the technique several times.
