Mental thickener, the obstacle that prevents you from thinking clearly and moving forward in life

Mental thickeners

When faced with a problem, our mind doesn’t always follow a linear path. In fact, it often goes off on a tangent, explores dead ends, and backtracks several times. To a certain extent, this process is normal. However, there comes a time when it simply becomes ineffective and, instead of allowing us to move forward, it keeps us stuck in a loop, unable to move forward.

What is a mind thickener exactly?

In the food industry, thickening agents are often used to increase the density of mixtures. In the kitchen, they help us achieve the perfect consistency to elevate our dishes to Michelin star level. However, applied to the mind, it is not so great.

Mental thickening turns our thoughts into a kind of “thick porridge.” It transforms ideas into insipid verbiage and makes us lose perspective, pushing us into a quicksand terrain in which we can hardly move forward.

Like food thickeners, it doesn’t really add anything significant, rather it expands and takes up mental bandwidth, making it more difficult for us to understand what is happening and find an effective solution.

Mental thickening seeks to confuse rather than clarify. It turns what is crystal clear into cloudy and prevents us from seeing better. That is why it is often the reason why we feel like we are not moving forward, whether in a specific situation or in life in general.

Signs you’re creating Mental Muddles

Mental thickeners are those shadows that creep into our thoughts, turning the clear into confusion and the simple into dense. Recognizing them is the first step to undoing the knots they create and regaining mental clarity.

The main signs that you are using a mind thickener are:

  1. Difficulty concentrating. You have trouble keeping your attention focused on a specific task or you are easily distracted because you feel like your mind is “foggy.”
  2. Repetitive thoughts. You find yourself mulling over the same ideas over and over again, without reaching a solution.
  3. Feeling overwhelmed. You experience a constant feeling of anxiety, emotional tension or exhaustion that makes it difficult for you to manage your daily life.
  4. Decision-making paralysis. No matter how hard you try, you feel unable to make decisions, even on trivial matters.
  5. Mental fatigue. You feel so mentally exhausted that you have trouble thinking, as if you are experiencing brain fog.
  6. Lack of clarity. You have trouble seeing the situation as a whole, you get caught up in the details and can’t find a solution.
  7. Inability to enjoy the present. These worries prevent you from relaxing and being fully present in the here and now.

The 5 most common mental thickeners

There are multiple mind thickeners. They do not all act the same, but generally each person shows a preference for using some to the detriment of others:

1. Concerns

Worries are the ultimate mind-thinning agent, as while they keep you busy, they don’t get you anywhere. When your mind feeds you anxious thoughts about the future or even catastrophic ideas, you start going around in circles, often without reaching any conclusion. This loop not only consumes mental energy, but also pushes you into a state of constant alertness that prevents you from focusing on more productive tasks.

2. Obsessions

Obsessions can also act as a powerful mental thickener, limiting your ability to think flexibly. When you obsess over an idea, it occupies your mind with an endless cycle that leads you to analyze every detail incessantly. This intensive focus not only consumes your time and energy, but also prevents you from seeing the situation from a broader perspective. Instead of looking for effective solutions, you get trapped in a labyrinth of repetitive thoughts, where you lose clarity and taking action seems like an impossible mission.

3. Overinformation

In the digital age, information overload can lead to more chaos and confusion than order and clarity. The flood of data, especially if you don’t take the time to analyze it, can cause ideas to overlap, creating a sense of confusion that makes decision-making difficult. Likewise, trying to find too much information can often end up making decision-making difficult, creating mental chaos that leads to analysis paralysis.

4. Perfectionism

Constantly striving for perfection can cloud your thinking and limit your ability to take action. Instead of moving forward, you get stuck searching for the ideal outcome. Perfectionism can also lead to a state of paralysis, where every task becomes a maze of unattainable standards. Instead of moving forward and making progress, you get stuck in the trap of self-importance, checking your ideas and plans over and over again for possible flaws.

5. Need for security

The desire to control everything also becomes a mental thickener that creates a considerable emotional burden. When you try to cover every detail in order to take the step with complete confidence, you lose sight of the bigger picture. While you pursue 100% certainty, you focus more and more on what can go wrong, which can end up paralyzing you, for fear of making a mistake or making the wrong decision.

As you may have noticed, it’s easy to get caught up in a spiral of confusing thoughts, but every little decision counts. Whenever you detect a sign of mental thickening, remember that it’s not a sentence, but rather an invitation to pause and consciously decide the direction in which your thoughts should move. Take the first step: let go of worries you can’t control, limit your search for information to what’s essential, and make room for imperfection and uncertainty in your life. This will prevent the paralysis and lack of clarity that mental thickeners create and will allow you to continue making decisions that allow you to move your life in the direction you want.
